He has been once tried by court-martial and 10 times in the Regimental Defaulters Book 1880 Joseph Pickering was the occupant and owner of a house at the corner of Parry Street and Queens Square Fremantle. (Rate books Fremantle) 1897 Attended Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee Banquet at Government House Joseph Pickering’s estate was valued at £2878/10/0 Value of land at Bunbury £200 Value of 4 stone buildings at 53 Queens Street Fremantle £2500. He left the property at Waterloo township, cattle, furniture and personal property to his wife Mary absolutely and all the rest and residue to her for her life after which it was to be divided as follows: ‘Piece of freehold now occupied by me at the corner of Perry (Parry) street and Queens Square Fremantle to my son Joseph William Pickering absolutely’ The other 4 houses and land in Parry Street starting from Queens Square 1st cottage and land to his daughter Florence May Pickering absolutely 2nd cottage and land to son Stephan Pickering absolutely 3rd cottage and land to daughter Hilda Mary Catherine Pickering absolutely 4th cottage and land to daughter Lucy Pickering absolutely In the 1841 census prior to his enlistment Joseph (15) was living with his parents Joseph (45) and Lucy (35) Pickering at Jury Wall Smeet (sic), St. Nicholas, Leicester with his siblings George, Sarah, William, Eliza and Lucy. Joseph, his father and brother George are all wool combers while sister Sarah is a wool spinner. [HO 107-605-9-39]By the time of 1851 Census Joseph Pickering is an army private age 25 at the Western Heights Barracks, Hougham, Dover [HO107-1632-10-739] In the 1861 Census Joseph is still a single man serving with the 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade North Camp, Farnborough, Hampshire, his place of birth is recorded as St. Martin’s Leicestershire. [RG09-435-38-27-0] Mary Carroll gave her father’s names as John Carroll, pensioner, on her marriage certificates and again he is named as John on her death registration. However the Pickering family believe she was the daughter of Cornelius Carroll who was also a Convict guard on the Belgravia. Apparently Cornelius left the colony about 1868 leaving his eight year old daughter Mary in the care of the Catholic church. In 1876 after the death of Joseph Pickering’s wife Lucy she married the 52 years of age Joseph. |
