1851 Cornelius Carroll 2135, Private, 74th Foot location at sea, Fermoy and Cork
1861 As Above location Bellary, East Indies
The 74th regiment fought at various places during the Indian Mutiny and Cornelius may have been a recipient of the Central India medal.
Mary Carroll gave her father’s names as John Carroll, pensioner, on her marriage certificates and again he is named as John on her death registration. However the Pickering family believe she was the daughter of Cornelius Carroll. Apparently Cornelius left the colony about 1868 leaving his eight year old daughter Mary in the care of the Catholic church. In 1876 after the death of Joseph Pickering’s wife Lucy she married the 52 years of age Joseph.
Many thanks to Rob Wilson for his excellent research on the family history of Cornelius Carroll.
