Further Information | British Army Worldwide Index 1841 George Campbell 417 Private 79th Foot location Gibraltar Discharge due to chronic rheumatism and pain in left side George Campbell age 45 received medical treatment during the voyage of the Hashemy for diarrhoea and a second time for a hernia. His son George age 12 was treated for phlegmon, William age 5 for rubeola and Christopher age 2 for phlegmon although he died 22nd October 1850 from Februs 3 days before arrival at Fremantle Charlotte Elizabeth and Christina were both baptised on 24th March 1852 which raises the question of them being twins or were they just tidying up. The father was George Campbell and mother Sarah. No trace of Ellen has been found although Broomhall said she was the informant on her father’s death certificate. When the Hashemy was chartered as a convict transport in 1850 its destination was Van Diemen’s Land but due to the strong anti-transportation movement in the Eastern states it was decided to send it to Western Australia where transportation was still acceptable. As a result the WO 23s still have the pensioners located in VDL in 1851 instead of Western Australia. |
