“I Thomas Bishop, Military Pensioner of Perth in the Colony of Western Australia do hereby revoke all former wills by me made and declare this to be my last will.
After payment of my just debts and funeral expenses I give to my wife Annie Bishop my land at West Claremont and cottage erected thereon, consisting of 20 acres more or less and numbered 1064 and 1065 Swan location, in the books of the Land Titles Office for her life and after her death to my son Thomas on condition that he will give my undernamed children and hold it for their use and benefit, protection and shelter for their lives viz
William, Edward, Jane, Maryann, Frederick, and James. I also give my wife Annie my furniture and everything that I can by law or dispose of, for her sole use and separate use and benefit her receipt being a sufficient discharge and I appoint said son Thomas Executor of this my will. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this twenty eighth day of August one thousand eight hundred and eighty nine…”
Thomas Minorgan and William Joyce were the witnesses. The estate was estimated at being under £200In his will Thomas Bishop lists seven of his children making no mention of the two eldest Susan and Charles although they were alive at the time of his making his will, perhaps he only thought the unmarried ones needed to be considered.

13th May 1885 Thomas Bishop age 60, living near the tannery Perth, applied to the Colonial Secretary for a position as a messenger, warder, watchman or any situation that may suit stating he was formerly a sergeant of pensioners and had 4 children aged 12,13, 14, and 16 to support.
Again on 30th May 1887 he again requested employment stating he was a married man with 4 children to support aged 10, 13, 15, and 19 living at the barracks. He further stated his army and Enrolled Force record , Colonial Secretary O’Grady Lefroy said “the applicant has a good character.”
6th October 1887 to Colonial Secretary:
I have selected Pensioner Sergeant Bishop subject to His Excellency’s approval to fill the vacancy (caused by the suicide of Pensioner Batley) – he bears an excellent character, he is steady, sober and trustworthy. He has quarters in the Barracks and therefore will not draw any lodging money- approved at 2/6 per diem.Son Charles Bishop was employed at the Government Printing works from August 1870 until his retirement. Appointed Sub-Overseer from January 1891. He was a keen sports man, life member of the WA Cricket Association & Mechanics Institute. Played Australian Rules football and later was an umpire.
Edward Bishop was employed as a clerk in the Government stores from August 1886.
James and Frederick are both mentioned in their father’s will in 1892 but Fred seem to have disappeared from there
