Further Information | British Army Worldwide Index: 1841 John Goodman 1418 Private 1st Batt 1st Foot stationed Gibraltar 1851 as above stationed Nova Scotia 1861 as above stationed depot Colchester Discharge: At own request having served upwards of 21 years In the 1861 Census John Goodman is still a private in the army but he is working as a servant in the home of Lieutenant William Freeborn at St. Nicholas Harwick Essex. His wife Margaret, age 33 born Jersey and children Thomas, age 8 born Newport Wales, Maryann, age 5 born London and Edward, age 3 born Scotland are also living at the same address. John Goodman and his family were due to proceed to Western Australia as part of the guard on the Merchantman in 1864 however after being on board for 17 days he and his family together with the family of William Costello (2 wives and 10 children) were put ashore at Portland 27 June 1864 owing to their children having measles. Both were part of the guard of the Racehorse the following year .Mentioned in Surgeon’s Log (although quoted as Thomas) Monday 24th July 1865 grog stopped for 7 days “for carrying silly tales among the women whilst employed washing” On the 30th June 1869 John Goodman, corporal of pensioners at Northam nominated his wife’s aunt Hannah a widow age 40 and cousins William age 23 and Mary age 23 (both single) as immigrants. The family was living at 14 Royal Square St Heliers Jersey at the time. There was a problem with the land that was allotted to the pensioners by the river at Northam in that the local farmers told them it was not worth clearing as they would be swamped in the winter. John Goodman Corporal in charge (Northam) wrote to Captain Roe on 17th March 1868 proposing a scheme whereby additional land could be either exchanged or added to the original grants. He had been allotted P2 and asked to be permitted to purchase a further 20 acres P5. His plan was approved. A Mary Anne Goodman married William Kenworthy in 1878 and died 1936 age 78 but we have no evidence to prove this was the daughter of John Goodman EPG. Margaret appears to have been admitted to the hospital on 14th April 1879 as Mary, age 46, Protestant born Jersey. She was living at Gouger Street at the time and had arrived on the Otway. Son Cosmos was also admitted to the hospital on 7th September 1893 and again on 1st November 1893. At the time he was living at “Kilkenny”, he was age 17, Single, Church of England, working as a collar maker, born Western Australia and had been in the Colony for 17 years. (No ship of arrival) John Goodman was admitted to the (Royal) Adelaide Hospital on 3rd March 1893 and 7th September 1893. He originally said he was age 70, Church of England, living “Kilkenny” occupation commissionaire, born Essex, and had been 1 8 years in the Colony and had arrived of the Race Horse (sic). John Goodman died in Royal Adelaide Hospital on 10 December 1894 after having been admitted on 30 November 1894 |
