Further Information | Richard may have been the son of Thomas and Susanna Trayhern who was baptised at Thornbury Gloucestershire on 29th August 1804. British Army Worldwide Index 1841 – Richard Trayhurn (sic) 35 Private 96th Depot Chatham Discharge due to age and infirmity. In the 1841 Census [HO7/487/14/25/18 Chatham Barracks Medway Kent England] Richard is a soldier living at the Chatham barracks with his wife Rosanna both are aged c25. Richard is recorded as not born in the county while Rosanna age 25 was born in Ireland. Also with the parents are the children Mary J aged 7, Susan age 6 both of whom were not born in the county but Esther age 1 was. See baptism WO 97 Inquiry held 12th April 1847 at Hobart town. The regiment was under orders to proceed to India it was felt that Richard should be returned to UK as he would not be suitable for the conditions endured by a soldier in India Esther age 10, Cecilia age 6 and Emma age 5, all received medical treatment aboard the Hashemy. Esther and Cecilia for rubella, Emma for diarrhoea. Richard Trayhorne was one of the pensioners who had their cottage built under a scheme authorised by Staff Officer Bruce where by the amount available to pensioners was not enough to cover the cost of the cottage (£47) and they agreed to pay 1/- per day towards the extra expense, however from 1st August to 31st January Richard Trayhorne paid at the rate of 2/- per day. 1862 Richard Trayhorne nominated his step son Patrick … age 15 living Athlone workhouse for an assisted immigrant. (AJCP Reel 1630 piece 123 page 377 The name is possibly Rowland) There seems to be an error in the marriage certificate (online) for Mary Jane as her husband is given as John Fletcher Randall but on all the children’s baptisms his name is John Fletcher and both Mary Jane and John are buried in the East Perth Cemetery as Fletcher. Esther’s daughter May Moulton married John McKernan son of pensioner McKernan 1889 at Bridgetown WA Postings of the regiment: Halifax 1824-1825 Bermuda 1815-1828 Halifax 1828-1835 1835-1840 Home 1840/1 Convict ship to NSW & Tasmania 1843 detachment to NZ 1849 posted to India from Australia It looks as if the children born prior to 1840 were born Halifax. Could not find any Anglican records for Halifax And after 1840 in NSW or Tasmania When the Hashemy was chartered as a convict transport in 1850 its destination was Van Diemen’s Land but due to the strong anti-transportation movement in the Eastern states it was decided to send it to Western Australia where transportation was still acceptable. As a result the WO 23s still have the pensioners located in VDL in 1851 instead of Western Australia. |
