Claimed discharge after the termination of his second period of engagement
18th April 1874 James Toohill successfully took H.M. Downing the Captain of the Naval Brigade to court for the payment of wages, two shilling per day for 111 days due to him for work undertaken on the voyage to Australia. He was awarded half of what he claimed.
In 1883 James suffered an injury when he fell from a cart. In 1895 he gave evidence in the libel case brought by the resident medical officer against the Victorian Express newspaper regarding his treatment
