Further Information | Disabled: From a gunshot wound of right side, followed by Haemoptysis. Stiffness of arm from abscesses, ball lodged, received at Inkerman. Purchased Fremantle sub lot 40 5 acres 1867 In 1888 John Stokes applied for fifteen pounds to erect a cottage on his Pensioner grant but the request was denied as the Imperial Grant had ceased on 31 March 1886. John Stokes made his will on 30th April 1897 adding a codicil on 14 March 1898. John appointed James Healy draper’s assistant of Fremantle and Thomas William Whitely contractor of Fremantle as his executors. He bequeathed his entire estate to his wife Elizabeth do with as she saw fit and on her death the residue was to be divided between his daughters Mary and Rose. It one of them should predecease him her share would go to the surviving daughter. ‘I also give and bequeath to William Percy Birmingham the rifle bullet with which I was wounded in the Crimea and which has been extracted by him from my body;’ He left his medal and four clasps to his daughter Mary and his Turkish medal to his daughter Rose. In the codicil he said ‘The property and estate which I have above bequeathed to my wife Elizabeth Stokes shall be and is hereby bequeathed to my son James Stokes of South Street Fremantle, dairyman, to be held by him in trust for the said Elizabeth Stokes. Furthermore in case either Mary or Rose should die it is my will that that portion of my estate which will come to them should be inherited by their children.’ The total value of the estate was £868/7/6, consisting of Fremantle Town Lot 744 on which there were two houses of five and six rooms valued at £800, the rest was the valuation of the furniture. |
