1851 Census (HO107/1658/795/3). Frederick Scanlan is a single man living with his regiment at the Portsmouth Barracks Hampshire. His rank is gunner and driver and he was born Dublin, Ireland
In the 1861 Census (RG09/1458/78/16) Frederick and his family are living at the no. 12 Pavilion, Lidford Barracks, Devon
Frederick age 45 is a warder at the infirmary and a Chelsea pensioner born Ireland. His wife Mary Anne is age 35 and she was born Titchfield Hampshire.
Frederick, his son is age 9 and he was born Egham Surrey while daughters Catherine and Ellen age 6 and 5 were both born at Woolwich, Kent. The younger children Emily and Thomas age 3 and 1 were both born at Lydford, Devon. Also living with the family is a general servant Sarah Jane Finch age 10.
In October 1882 Frederick Scanlan ‘was charged with having on the 13th September last caused the death of a man named William Barr (pensioner) by administering a poisonous compound’ – found Not Guilty
