His father is an agricultural labourer. 1871 Census RG 10/1094/27/6 Robert Stammer (sic) agricultural labourer, is living at Solders Return Steyning with his wife Emily S. age 36, occupation dressmaker, born Hailsham Sussex. Also living with them is Robert Stammer age 18, a visitor, Ag Lab, born Worthing Sussex and Louisa Welsh, a niece age 2 born Herstmonceux, Sussex, England. A Louise Welsh, age 20, daughter of Robert Welsh married Albert Edward Gilbert at Adelaide on 22nd April 1889 and may be the 2 year old on the 1871 census and possibly the woman George called his sister and next of kin. Robert’s son George enlisted in the Boer War and 3rd Light Horse WW1. George’s name on his enlistment was recorded as Stammers He enlisted at Oakland SA on 15th December 1914, discharged 6th June 1919. Award all three medals for the conflict. His next of kin was recorded as Mrs A Gilbert, his sister. The Australian War Memorial holds records for Robert, his son George and grandson Bruce Stanmer. |
