Further Information | British Army Worldwide index 1841 George Ruddock 889 Private 2nd Foot guards 2nd Bn location Quebec Canada Discharge due to impaired breathing and a double rupture George was treated for catarrh and phthisis during the voyage of the Hashemy. When the Hashemy was chartered as a convict transport in 1850 its destination was Van Diemen’s Land but due to the strong anti-transportation movement in the Eastern states it was decided to send it to Western Australia where transportation was still acceptable. As a result the WO 23s still have the pensioners located in VDL in 1851 instead of Western Australia. 1855 dismissed from Enrolled Pensioner Force for drunkenness In 1862 George attempted to commit suicide when he threw himself into the Swan river near Perth while suffering from delirium tremours only to be rescued by a passer-by named Martin. After George’s death in 1868, Elizabeth went to live at Gingin with her daughter Elizabeth Gee where she died on 24th December 1878. |
