The 15th regiment returned to England from Canada in 1840, after a 2 year stay in England they were stationed in Ireland (Templemore/ Limerick) until departing for Ceylon from Cork on the ships Maria Somes and Mariner 1845 arriving 15th January 1846, Henry was there for 10 years, almost up to his discharge Henry Rooney was one of the pensioners who accompanied CC Hunt on his expedition from 17th January -16 August 1865 to find an inland route to the north sinking new wells and shoring up existing ones along the way as well as blazing the trail. Unfortunately it was conducted at the worst time of the year and great hardship was endured from excessive heat and bush fires as well as sore eyes, splinters in the eyes and lack of water 1871 January – Joseph, wife and daughter appear on Albany’s list of Roman Catholics which appears daughter Catherine Rooney was still alive. Mr and Mrs Sam Eaton and their son and daughter are also on the list. For the sponsors at the baptisms of their children Mary Anne and Samuel Eaton chose members of the family: for Samuel in 1867 mother Jane Rooney was sponsor, in 1869 for Robert, Joseph Henry Rooney was the sponsor, 1871 for Maria Jane, Catherine Rooney was the sponsor but by 1874 Lizzie Mc Glade was the sponsor for Louisa Catherine. All were baptised Albany Western Australia. Thanks to David Senn for his research into Henry Rooney |
