Further Information | British Army Worldwide Index 1841 Matthew Rice 1257 Private 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade location Malta 1851 As above location Dover Discharge due to appointment to the permanent staff of the 3rd King’s Own Staffordshire Rifle Regiment of Militia In the 1851 Census HO 107/1632/736/6 Mathew(sic) age 33 a single man is a residing at Houghan Dover a soldier with his regiment Transferred to the Rifle Brigade in 1854 for the purpose of serving with an older brother, known to be James 1861 Census RG 09/1916/117/14 Stubbs Street Newcastle under Lyme Matthews (sic) Rice age 44 is a Chelsea Pensioner born Ireland living with his wife Sarah age 34 born Middlehurst (Midhurst) Sussex and their children John age 3 years and Mary A aged 7 months both born Newcastle Staffordshire 13th March 1863 Prior to sailing Corporal Rice was reprimanded for allowing Private Bennett to sleep while on watch. 4th September 1868 purchased York Lot 276 of 5 acres 1 rood 10 perches In March 1873 the Pensioners of York were called out to defend the home of Pensioner Matthew Rice from fire the Resident Magistrate report several Pensioners refused to report for duty.
