The 14 year old Samuel is an apprentice stone mason in the home of William and Sarah Billing.
1841 Census HO 107/959/19/38 Browns Elms Pitminster. Eliza Gibbins age 14 is a servant in the home of Charles and Elizabeth Roberts
1851 Census HO 107/1923/252/11 Cheddon Fitzpaine Somerset Eliza, a spinster aged 25, born Pitminster Somerset, is working as a cook in the home of William Sellick.
1861 Census RG 09/1613/91/14 transcribed as “Samuel Caton”
Samuel age 34 and Eliza age 33 are living at Pitminster Somerset, both born Pitminster and Samuel is working as a mason

Samuel age 44 a stone mason and pensioner 13th Lt Infantry is living with his wife Eliza age 43 both were born Pitminster Somerset as was their daughter Elizabeth Ann age 7. Son John age 4 was born Clifton Gloucestershire and William age 2 was born Blackrod Lancashire
8th October 1875 Applied to purchased Fremantle Suburban Lot S31 of 5 acres for £9.0.0 Lime Kilns Hampton Road, Fremantle. This land had previously been allocated to EPG Lucas.
12th August 1881 Samuel Oaten requested permission to occupy an allotment of five acres No 32 near Fremantle having bought the adjoining Lot No 31. Staff Officer A R Thompson said he was discharged from the Enrolled Duty Force last November when it was disbanded after nearly 7 years service during which time his character was very good. Permission granted 24th August 1881
Saturday 28th December 1889 the valuable property of Mr Oates at Beaconsfield was advertised for sale. It comprised 5 acres on which a 2 roomed cottage was built along with a well, pigsty, fowl houses and a lime kiln.
No death has been found for Eliza Beswick nee Oaten who married Frederick Richard Beswick in 1883. They do not appear to have had any children. Eliza is not mentioned in the funeral notice for her mother in 1908. Frederick was living with his brother-in-law John Oaten in 1894. (See Daily News Tuesday 10th April 1894 page 2) He died 19th May 1932 age 70, there is only a funeral notice from the Lumper’s union to mark his death
