The 14 year old Samuel is an apprentice stone mason in the home of William and Sarah Billing
1861 Census RG 09/1613/91/14 transcribed as “Samuel Caton”
Samuel age 34 and Eliza age 33 are living at Pitminster Somerset, both born Pitminster and Samuel is working as a mason.

Samuel age 44 a stone mason and pensioner 13th Lt Infantry is living with his wife Eliza age 43 both were born Pitminster Somerset as was their daughter Elizabeth Ann age 7. Son John age 4 was born Clifton Gloucestershire and William age 2 was born Blackrod Lancashire

Saturday 28th December the valuable property of Mr Oates was advertised for sale. It comprised 5 acres on which a 2 roomed cottage was built along with a well, pigsty, fowl houses and a lime kiln.

 

12th August 1881 Samuel Oaten requested permission to occupy an allotment of five acres No 32 near Fremantle having bought the adjoining Lot No 31. Staff Officer A R Thompson said he was discharged from the Enrolled Duty Force last November when it was disbanded after nearly 7 years service during which time his character was very good. Permission granted 24th August 1881
