Further Information | Mentioned in Pension Payment Books – Money paid to Wife. The Bi-Centennial has Charles Oakley marrying a Harriet Burton/Barton on 7 September 1866 at Fremantle. They had 3 children: Charles Thomas born 1867 at Fremantle father Charles William John born 1871 father Charles-not possible Harriet Mary born 1869 father Charles-possible However we know that Charles left the state before September 1868 so the paternity of the two later children is extremely suspect. One third of his pension was paid to his wife in WA but that was discontinued and money refunded. Was he paying for children he did not father? A Harriet Oakley married Thomas Barker in 1873; it rather looks as if Harriet was living with him prior to the marriage. (NAA entry acknowledges 1 child only)A Charles Oakley died in Victoria on 16 July 1896 aged 74. This man was married to Emma and had three children Frederick, Charles and a Mrs Eleanor Whitehead. This Charles Oakley left a will where he described himself as a gentleman. The estate was worth 545 pounds. The family came from UK on a ship called Athlone in 1853 so it is not our Charles. |
