Discharge due to Chronic rheumatism
In the 1861 Census John McKay, pensioner, age 39 is a visitor at the home of James and Elizabeth Welsh at 20 Candleriggs street Glasgow.
Isabella Paton [born Ayr in 1836 daughter of Janet (nee Watson) & John Paton] a domestic servant, married John McKay a Calenderer (operator of a roller machine for glazing and smoothing paper) at the Church of Scotland St James Road Glasgow on 6 June 1862. Both were residing at 20 Candelriggs Street .
Conduct of both John and Isabella McKay was recorded by the Surgeon Superintendent of the Merchantman as being Very Good.
On 22nd May 1908 Isabella Gardner wrote her will bequeathing all her worldly possessions to her son John Donald McKay Gardner and naming him executor. The estate consisted of land and buildings valued at £1285/10/0 with debts of 500/3/0 making the value of the estate £785/7/0. The land was 3 pieces of land consisting of 2 roods 3 perches subdivision 32 &33 of Perth suburban lot 162 with frontages to Claisebrook Road and Summer Street with a 4 roomed villa, another smaller 4 roomed cottage and a small cottage of 3 rooms. If John Donald was to die unmarried the residue of the estate would go to her granddaughter.
Janet Mary McKay was 4 years old when her father died, they were living on the Mezzanine floor of the Perth pensioner Barracks. Her mother Isabella McKay married John Gardner, pensioner, after the death of his first wife Isabella (Lawson). Isabella McKay had nursed Isabella Gardner (Lawson) before her death. Janet McKay attended school at the Barracks and was taught music and played the organ at St. Georges Terrace Presbyterian Church-later Trinity. (Information from Evelyn Morgan letter dated 2014)
