Further Information | British Army Worldwide Index 1841 Mathew Mitchell 93 Private 65th Foot location Isle aux Noix Canada Discharge due to attacks of fever while in the West Indies 1831-2 Catarrh and ophthalmia when in America have weakened his health Matthew served at the West Indies from 7th December 1829 – 2nd January 1838 and North America 3rd January 1838 – 16th July 1841 Wife would not accompany him to Western Australia (WO23/42 1845-1854) She may have relented at the last minute as she is represented in the Surgeon’s sick list: 19th October 1850 Mrs Mitchell age 38 received medical treatment aboard the Hashemy ‘Febris’ Mathew Mitchell left Western Australia after being paid until 30th September 1852 with the intention of going to New Zealand however he seems to have decided to stay in Victoria as his pension was paid there from the last quarter of 1852 to his death. When the Hashemy was chartered as a convict transport in 1850 its destination was Van Diemen’s Land but due to the strong anti-transportation movement in the Eastern states it was decided to send it to Western Australia where transportation was still acceptable. As a result the WO 23s still have the pensioners located in VDL in 1851 instead of Western Australia. |
