Barker: “1843 Farm servant before enlisting in Army. 1868 part of party to Clackline distance 24 miles with wife and 2 children. 1868 April 20 Dismissed for making false statements on his application. Lied about his age with intent to deceive the Civil Service Commissioners; knowing that the upper age limit for appointment was 40 yrs. Had copy of army discharge papers and could not have forgotten his age. Denied being examined in 1864. Legal advice was he could not be prosecuted.”
