In the 1861 Census James is an unmarried soldier at the Hut Barracks, Pembroke Dock, Wales age 33 born Seven Oaks Kent.
When James Meekhums Married Celia Martha Whitewood she was a widow with seven children, George b 1844, Charles b 1848, Eliza b 1848, Celia b 1849, William b 1851, Harriet Sarah b 1853 and Thomas b 1855. Of these children only George, Harriet Sarah and Thomas came to Western Australia on the Racehorse.
