Further InformationAlthough Patrick Matthews did not receive any medals having left India as a very sick man, he was awarded a gratuity of £10 for long service. For the last 2 years of his army service he had been relieved of his regimental duties spending much of the last year of service in hospital.
British Army Worldwide Index
1841 Patrick Matthews 990 Corporal from Private 86th Foot location Dublin
1851 Patrick Mathews (sic) 990 Sergeant 86th Foot location Poona
Discharge due to chronic dyspepsia, acute pain in stomach for 3 years making him unfit for further service.
Patrick died in Madras on 3rd February 1868 from atrophy it appears his family could have accompanied him to India as his son David married there in 1878 and it is very probable his widow Elizabeth Matthews died on 9th October 1892 at Umballa.
