He was attested for the Royal Westminster Light infantry regiment of Militia at Hammersmith MDX on 24th April 1868 until he was discharged at Turnham Green on 23rd April 1873.
1871 Census RG 10/1320/36/3 The Barracks Turnham Green Cheswick
Thomas Maher is age 41 a Color Sergeant and pensioner born Zante Ionian Island is living with his wife Sarah age 28 a dressmaker who was born Cavan Ireland. Their 2 year old son William HPL was born at Turnham Green Middlesex
November 1880 Sergeant Thomas Maher of the 94th regt was on the Nominal List for Enrolled guard, however Colonel Harvest considered him unfit for the position. At the time he was living at the No 1 Fremantle Barracks with his wife and 4 children.
25th March 1881 Thomas Maher was Corporal of the guard when 2 prisoners escaped from the Convict Establishment at Fremantle. At the subsequent inquiry they  “ … considered Corporal Maher commanding the prison guard has been guilty of gross neglect & laxity in performance of duty almost to the point of collusion, recommends Maher’s dismissal”.
Dismissed 2nd April 1881.
7th November 1881 He was subsequently employed as Corporal of the Guard at the exhibition building and 10th January 1882 appointed Magazine warder at Fremantle.
It is recorded that Thomas had 9 children most of whom are unknown. A child Ellen Sarah was born 15th December 1847 to a Thomas and Sarah Maher of the 94th Regiment at Karrachee  Belgaum. If this is our Thomas it appears he had 2 wives both Sarah as Sarah Brogan was born 1843 and could hardly be this child’s mother. No marriage has been found for either.25 March 1881 Evidence taken at an inquiry into the escape of 2 prisoners from the Convict Establishment on 21 March:-Considers Corporal Maher commanding the prison guard has been guilty of gross neglect & laxity in performance of duty almost to the point of collusion, recommends Maher’s dismissal
