Discharge: Unfit for service due to pulmonary consumption the result of wounds and exposure while on active service in the Crimea and while a prisoner in Russia. Received violent blows on the chest with the butt end of a musket on the 22 March 1855 during a sortie made by the enemy at Sebastopol. Suffered consequently from acute pneumonia which terminated in tubercular deposit in the lungs. This disease must materially interfere with his earning a livelihood.
In the 1861 Census William R Locke is a warder at the Divisional Military Prison North Camp Aldershot. His wife Anna is age 34 born Ireland while son William is 2 months of age and was born Aldershot Hampshire, and is listed as William R however George Locke said he was born in 1861 at Aldershot so it looks like it is the same child – could be an enumerator’s error.
Prior to being employed as a warder at Aldershot William had to sign a declaration as to his age and place of birth as he was unable to locate a birth certificate.
On 25th October 1869 William Reuben Locke applied to purchased Fremantle Suburban Lot 28 of 5 acres at £5 per acre.
