Further InformationIn 1846 when John Kairey married Catherine Kelly he is recorded as being a widower,
1851 Census HO 107/2220 Waterloo G, Ardwick, Manchester
Although this entry is badly damaged by a red ink stain it records John and Catherine Kairey aged 43 and 42 respectively living with John’s daughter Mary Ann age 7. All were born Ireland.
17 July 1854 together with Richard Connelly and John Campbell John Kairey wrote to the Colonial Secretary regarding their cottages being without doors and windows for some time making them damp. (SROWA CSR Cons 36 Volume 303/107)
In the census held at York WA on 31 December 1859 John Kairey is living in his house at York, it says he is age 51, a protestant, pensioner, could both read and write, arrived 1851 per Minden, born Ireland married England. His wife Catherine Kairey was aged 50, RC, could neither read nor write, arrived Minden in 1851, born Ireland and married England.
He had 1 acre of wheat, 1 acre of barley, a kitchen garden and owned a goat. Daughter Mary Ann is not with them. His signature is at the bottom of the entry.
Daughter Mary Ann (16) is residing at the home of farmer Thomas Herbert with her husband William Walters (28), both working as servants, no further information for Mary Ann except she was married in Western Australia.
Although Mary Ann’s name is Kerry on the marriage certificate she is identified as Kairey on the birth registrations for her children Sarah Ellen b 1860 and William John b 1862 both at York.
The Bi-Centennial dictionary states her mother was Mary Wellins but no marriage between John Kairey and Mary Wellins has been found.
