1871 Census Castle Chain Pontefract Yorkshire
John Heyland (sic) age 39 a Chelsea pensioner and Militia Staff Sergeant is living with his wife Mary Ann age 20 (born Ireland) and their daughters Rose Margaret age 3 born Gibraltar and Lillian Jane age 2 months born Pontefract.
Pension suspended during three months imprisonment. Convicted in Australia for unlawfully wounding his wife through jealousy. War Office with letter from Senior Officer Pensioners Fremantle, issued the Man’s pension on person responsibility in order prevent the wife and children starving. Former decision now ordered to be varied and only one third suspended the rest to be paid to the wife during imprisonment beyond which the board does not feel justified in giving the rest.
In November 1880 John Hyland was on the Nominal list for the Enrolled Guard, he was living at the Fremantle Barracks with his wife and 5 children. He was dismissed from the guard on 7th December 1880. Private Hyland requested leave for longer periods to enable him to look after some plots of land some distance from Fremantle he was cultivating. He appeared to question the authority of the Sgt. Major and spoke to him with disrespect. When reprimanded by the Commanding Officer of the EG he replied in an improper manner.
In June 1881 he was allowed the £15 grant as he had built his 2 roomed stone cottage as required at Koojee.
