Further Information | 1841 stationed in the West Indies and Canada 1851 Stationed in Dublin Ireland Discharge: At own request after 21 years service Obituary 1892 West Australian: Mr. William Russell Houston, late of H.M. 89th Regiment. Deceased having served a number of years in his regiment, upon being pensioned off determined to come, with his family, to Western Australia, and arrived in the ship Lincelles, as a convict guard, in the year 1862. He served upon the Enrolled Guard as sergeant until the force was disbanded, and subsequently was appointed a warder. During the visit of the Duke of Edinburgh to the colony in 1869 Sergeant Houston was chosen by the late Colonel Bruce, the then commandant, to act as orderly to His Royal Highness. During the long connection of the deceased with the enrolled force in Perth he proved himself an exemplary soldier, and was held in high esteem by his comrades, who at one time were very numerous in the colony, but are now fast thinning out. It may be mentioned, too, that in the early ” good old days ” of volunteering Sergeant Houston formed one of the M.R.V. band, at a time when the band comprised a number of old military bandsmen. Deceased leaves a widow and large family to mourn their loss. He passed away in his seventy-fifth year |
