Discharge: “Corporal Abraham Hobbs of the 76th Regt labourers under defective vision of both eyes which renders him unfit for service. The disability was first noticed in 1856 while stationed at Camp at Halifax, Nova Scotia, and appears to arise from Constitutional infirmity. It therefore cannot be justly attributed to intentional neglect, vice, or misconduct on his part”.
2 April 1873 Edward D. Harvest requested to be informed whether the wife and children of Pensioner A. Hobbs (77th Foot, 10d pension) were still being supported by the Local Government as H(is)E(xcellency) can authorise that a stoppage of 1/3 of Hobbs pension be made to his wife who he had left destitute and 1/3 for the children.
In 1874 Abraham Hobbs left Western Australia for Victoria returning in 1876
28 August 1876. ABRAHAM HOBBS charged Rosanna Hobbs alias Stephane, married woman, with feloniously marrying one John Stephane on the 20th May 1872 her former husband ABRAHAM HOBBS being the above, remanded 8 days. 4 September 1876 Remanded 8 days.
11 October 1876 Memorandum: W. Dale Officer in Charge of Poor House.
Re the return of Archibald Hobbs to the Colony was now employed on the night Duty Force being in a position where he could maintain his children one of whom was in the Poor House and 2 were in the RC Orphanage.
13 October 1876 Colonel Harvest replied:
“As soon as he could he would employ Hobbs on the Day Force to entitle him to quarters and rations in the Barracks and would enable him to support the children and sent them to school”.
“He is unfortunately situated as his wife is married to another man in Fremantle and the charge of bigamy which he bought against her has fallen through from want of Coincidental proof that she was the woman to whom he was married at the Curragh in 1859”.
