Present at the surrender of the Sikh army the occupation & attack on Peshawar and the expulsion of the Affghans (sic) beyond the Kyber Pass(sic). Received a medal for the services in the Punjaub Campaign and for the battle of Chillianwalla and one for the Battle of Goojerat. Served with the Central Indian field force in 1857/58 under the command of Major General Sir Hugh Rose KCB, was present at the capture of Rashghur 29 Jany, action of Baroda 31 Jany, capture of Garracotta and pursuit of the rebels 13 February, forcing Muddenpore Pass 3 March, battle of Bettwa 1 April, siege capture of Jhansi 5 April, action of …Battle of Galowlee 7 May 22, advance and capture of Calpee and pursuit of the rebels 22 May, capture of Morar cantonments 16 June, Recapture of town and fortress of Gwalior 19 June 1858.”Joseph Grice was entitled to prize money for Central India British Army Woldwide Index 1851 Joseph Grice 1451 Private 14th Lt Dragoons location Meerut India 1861 Joseph Grice 2417/1451 Trooper 14th Light Dragoons Location Newbridge (near Dublin) In the 1841 Census Joseph Grice age 13, an agricultural labourer is living with the family of Joseph Wartnaby a farmer (The next door family is that of John Grice (50) and his wife Mary and their children Martha (20) John (11) Walter (9) and Isaac (6) which could possibly be Joseph’s family.) Discharge due to varicose ulcers and veins of the left leg. During the voyage of the Merchantman Joseph Grice did duty as a hospital sergeant. The Surgeon Superintendent rated his conduct as Very Good. Joseph Grice may have journeyed to New Zealand to enlist in the Maori Wars but he does not appear on the Waikato lists. |
