1851 John Greer 1731 Private 77th Foot location Newport (Mon) Wales
In the 1851 Census John Greer is a single man age 26 a private in the 77th Foot born Antrim Ireland living at the Barracks, St. Mary’s, Cardigan, Cardiganshire Wales
Although reported as being missing in the London Gazette (26th September 1855 Issue 21790 page 3606) John Greer turned up as injured as they following paragraph clearly shows:
Discharge due to “a musket ball entered the upper part of the right side of his chest (between the 1st and 2nd ribs) and at about the outer 3rd and passing downwards and backward came out beneath the inferior angle of the scapular on the same side. Resulting from this he had haemolyses and is very short winded on exertion and is also unable to carry a pack or bear any constriction above the chest and the power of his right arm is much impaired as regards any great exertion or the carrying of weight such as that of a firelock wounded September 8th 1855 at the final assault on Sebastopol.
1861 Census GR 09
John Greer and his family are living at Vaughans Buildings Castle Street Liverpool
John aged 34 is a Chelsea Pensioner and was born at Downpatrick Ireland
Sarah, his wife is aged 36 and was born Liverpool Lancashire
Mary age 8, William age 6 Elizabeth aged 4 and Thomas aged 1 were all born Liverpool Lancashire.
From the age of the children and the date of the marriage (1858) it is likely that the older children were the children of a previous marriage, Sarah was a widow at the time of the marriage.
20th March 1863 during the voyage of the Clyde John Greer was reported for speaking and holding conversation with one of the guard whilst on duty as a sentry. He had his grog stopped for 3 days.
1880 John Greer was charged with threatening to take the life of his wife Sarah, ordered to find two sureties of £10 and himself £10 to keep the peace for three months.
A William Greer aka Johnny Allsorts age 47 years died on 9th August 1901 from a “self- inflicted pistol shot wound, he being of an unsound mind.” William had been suffering from Bright’s disease at the time of the tragedy.
