Further Information | Prior to enlisting in the British army John had been studying for the priesthood having accompanied Dr Golding to Port Jackson in 1835, finding he was not suited to the priesthood he returned to London and enlisted in the British army. (See profile FamilyWest Library EPG files) Discharge due to an injury to his index finger of his left hand caused by an injury at the battle of Sobraon 10 February 1846. He had been present at the action at Punniar, and the army of Sutlej 1845-6 and present at the action at Moodkee, Ferozoshar, Aliwal, and Sobraon. John Gorman’s first wife was his cousin Catherine McDonough her mother’s maiden name being Elizabeth Gorman but on the baptisms for her daughters she said her mother was Elizabeth Smith. In the 1851 Census John Gorman is living with his wife Catherine and daughter Mary at Palace St. Westminster, London John Gorman wrote a journal of the voyage of the Minden wherein he mentions the birth of his daughters and the assistance given by Mrs Mangan, Foran and in particular that of Mrs Gaunt in the delivery of the twins and saving the life of the 2nd born. Mrs Whitely acted as a wet nurse to the twins. He also mentions the kindness shown by the captain and surgeon to his wife and the extra rations allowed her. He records the quantities of food and water issued to the guard, deaths at sea and any major events of the voyage. He records a muster held in Perth shortly after the ships arrival. John Gorman was given the local rank of Sergeant Major when employed in the Commandant’s office. After John’s death his second wife Julia married detective Thomas Rowe in 1875 at Fremantle WA |
