Served in the South African (Kaffir) war for 10 months being disembarked from the “Castor”.  Was on board the “Vernon” at the battle of Vuelta de Obligado 1845.
Life at sea was not without excitement for John DENMAN. On 29th November 1839 whilst the HMS “Tribune” was in port in Tarragona Spain, a violet tempest occurred in which the HMS “Tribune” was totally lost.  Everything from the HMS “Tribune” was saved

John DENMAN was one of the Pensioners to entrust monies to Captain Foss’s keeping who then embezzled it.  John lost £8/0/0.
