Discharge due to wound received at Sobraon.
‘Served in the campaign of Afghanistan and was present at the action of Moodkee Ferozeshar Aliwal and Sobraon –wounded at the latter.’
After the arrival of the Scindian at Fremantle Captain Henderson wrote a report listing the rank name, trade or calling, rate of pension, date of enlistment for 5 months service, marital status, and number of children for each pensioner. Sometimes the trade of calling differed from that recorded at the time of attestation:
Private John Day, farm labourer, 6d. 17th January, married 1 child.
John Day was allotted a grant of 5 acres at South Perth a settlement which had no chance of success owing to its isolation being only assessable by water and the heavy timbering of the land. All the men surrendered their allotments some being granted land at Freshwater Bay.
John Day was drowned in the Swan River near Freshwater Bay while delivering timber to Fremantle.
9th November Mrs Day applies for relief as she has just been confined, recommends she be allotted rations for a short period.
There appears to be some confusion about the name of John Day’s wife as not only does the Christian name vary between Johanna, Judith and Julia but the surname varies from Kilfoyle, Kilfroy, Kilfoy to Guilfoyle.
The marriage of John Dea (sic) on 30th August 1847 at Cashel Tipperary gives the bride’s name as Judith Guilfoyle. There is also a Mary Dea (sic) baptised Cashel on 12th June 1848 mother Judy Guilfoyle who may be a child of the John Day marriage. However, on Allice Dey’s (sic) baptism her mother’s name is given as Julia Kilfoy. It appears that as Judith Kilfroy(sic) she married William Walsh at Fremantle in 1854.
William and Judith do not appear to have had children in Western Australia and they disappear from the records.
