1851 William Costolo 1156 was stationed at Dublin Ireland
William was awarded a silver medal for long service and good character.
William served for 18 years 304 days in the 31st regiment and 2 years 38 days in the Royal Canadian Rifles.
Discharge: Unfit for further service due to dyspepsia, failing health and activity.
William Costello and his family were due to proceed to Western Australia as part of the guard on the Merchantman in 1864 however after being on board for 17 days he and his family together with the family of John Goodman (total of 2 wives and 10 children) were put ashore at Portland 27 June 1864 owing to their children having measles. Both were part of the guard of the Racehorse the following year.
He was one of the three men on the Racehorse who as teetotallers received the special allowance as under the Admiralty regulations.
