William Connor’s name is on the pension list for South Australia but there is no record of payment for him nor does there appear to be any entries in the NAA Payment to Out pensioners Index.
The 1871 Census for Quebec has William age 40, born Ireland, Military, living with his wife Catherine, (sic), age 35, born Ireland and their children William age 10 B Scotland (Ecosse), Mary Ann age 6 born England (Angleterre), Eva age 4 born England and John age 2 born Quebec, Canada. Whether the name Catherine is an enumerator error or there is another reason we do not know, however, a Margaret Connor, pensioner’s wife, died in Western Australia in 1877 who appears to have been the wife of William Connor of the 69th regiment. On the Census the place of birth is Ireland as it is on the RAH admissions although on his WO 97 it is Dundee in Scotland.
William must have married again as he is listed as a married man on both his hospital admission and his death notice mentions a wife and 5 sons and 5 daughters of which we have only found 4 sons and 3 daughters. The (Royal) Adelaide Hospital admissions have the following entries for William and his daughter Mary:
William O’Connell (sic) admitted 20th February 1890, RC, age 58, Married, born Ireland, residence Hackney, Occupation Beetle(?) no of years in Colony 12, ship of arrival Naval Brigade.
William O’Connor (sic) admitted 26th April 1892, RC, age 63, Married, born Ireland residence Melbourne Street North Adelaide Occupation Butler no of years in colony 20, ship of arrival Naval Brigade.
Mary O’Connor admitted 12th January 1886, age 22, RC, living Hindley street, occupation Barmaid, born Portland, 11 years in colony, ship of arrival Naval Brigade
Mary O’Connor admitted 5th May 1886, age 22 years, RC, living Walkerville, occupation housemaid, 7 years in colony, ship of arrival Naval Brigade.
