1841 William Caple 487 Private 56th Foot depot location Newry and Armagh
Discharge due to asthma
William was branded with a D for desertion in 1837.
William Caple age 40 received medical treatment for ophthalmia during the voyage to WA as did Mrs Caple aged 38 for phlegmon and son John age 8 for diarrhoea and haemoptysis.
When the Hashemy was chartered as a convict transport in 1850 its destination was Van Diemen’s Land but due to the strong anti-transportation movement in the Eastern states it was decided to send it to Western Australia where transportation was still acceptable. As a result the WO 23s still have the pensioners located in VDL in 1851 instead of Western Australia.
William Caple was one of the pensioners who had their cottage built under a scheme authorised by Staff Officer Bruce where by the amount available to pensioners was not enough to cover the cost of the cottage (£47) and they agreed to pay 1/- per day towards the extra expense.)
In furtherance of this plan I obtained from Captain Wray RE plans and specifications upon which Tenders were invited at my request by the Deputy Commissariat General.
The result was that Mr. C. King of Perth tendered to construct a 2 roomed bricked cottage, with shingled roof, upon each allotment for the sum of £47 per cottage, a remarkably low tender, one in short which I believe can have benefited the contractor no further than enabling him to convert into money a portion of the building materials he had on hand.
