In the 1851 Census Pensioner William Campbell is a single man age 43 a lodger in the home of Henry Rowlandton at Back Lane Preston. He was born in Scotland.
No marriage found for William and Margaret and from the 1851 census which was taken on 30th March there is only a very small window between that and the sailing date of the Minden – 16th July 1851. The Surgeon listed William’s son Charles as being 8 while the East Perth Cemetery said he was 7 months of age when he died, no birth has been found and if he was really age 8 years he could have been the son of a former marriage of Margaret.
William Campbell was drowned at Freshwater Bay when he went to the assistance of William Sydenham who also drowned. On 12th March 1852 the Comptroller General was authorised to pay the widow of Pensioner Campbell fourteen shillings from the wages due to William Sydenham from his employment with J. Herbert of Perth. ( ref: SROWA Cons 488/30 Letter 270 page 1016)
