The Surgeon Superintendent of the Merchantman recorded: 22nd November 1862 In consequence of incapacity shown by Sergeant Major Smith in the management of the Guard, he has this day been suspended and Sergeant Callaghan appointed Act. Sergeant Major.
25th December 1862 Acting Sergeant Major Callaghan having been found fault with for being the worse for drink, he requested to be relieved from the duty of Acting Sergeant Major, which has accordingly been done, and Sergeant Smith appointed Sergeant Major.
The Surgeon Superintendent rated John Callaghan’s conduct as Good and Mrs Callaghan and children’s as Very Good
