Further Information | Discharge: Unfit for Service. Wounded by gunshot on 8th September at 2nd attack on the Redan James Callaghan did not take easily to life as a soldier and in his short period of service he was tried four times by Regimental Court Martial, found guilty and imprisoned for periods ranging from 4 days to 6 weeks. They considered his character & conduct to be very bad. His conduct appeared to have improved in WA. In 1864 while serving at Rottnest pensioner James Callaghan applied for Maria …pley (sic) a single woman age 24 to be approved as a Government immigrant. At the time she was living at Pointer Lane Kilkenny, the reference was the Rev Mr Dumply she was not related to James. She appears to have arrived as a nominated immigrant on the Strathmore in 1864 although her age was recorded as 48 not 24. Karrakatta Cemetery records her age at the time of her death in 1919 as 77 ie born 1842. They were married in 1867 at Perth Western Australia Cons 527/1886/4342 28 July 1886 Mr Patrick Murphy of R6 Walker St., Kilkenny wrote for Mrs Cate Torpy asking the whereabouts of James Callaghan, pensioner, as he is a very near relation of hers. She has written many times and got no answer. The police investigated and located James in the Mt. Eliza Barracks. He admitted to having received 2 letters and promised to reply to Mr Murphy. |
