Further Information | British Army worldwide Index 1841 Richard Batley 1681 Private 8th Foot Depot location Guernsey 1851 Richard Batley 1771 Private 86th Foot location Poona 1861 Richard Batly(sic) 1771 location Templemore Disabled by musket wound to the back of his head at Jhansi 3rd April 1858 Discharge at own request having served 21 years. 20th March 1863 during the voyage of the Clyde Private Batley was reported for speaking to a convict knowing it was against orders – Grog stopped for 10 days and 10days of extra barricade duty. 4th April 1863 Mrs Batley was delivered of a female child. From the funeral notice for Margaret Batley Snr it appears she worked for the WAGR Verdict of suicide 1887 made by Perth Police Court inquest into Richard BATLEY’s death 6th October 1887 Letter to the Colonial Secretary: I regret to report for His Excellency’s Information an attempt to commit suicide on the 1st instant by Pensioner Batley the messenger and caretaker in the Imperial pay department, he with a revolver shot himself through the head, the bullet has been extracted but there is little hope of his recovery SROWA Cons 527/1887/3615 Further Information: 24th October 1887 Margaret Batley wrote to the Colonial Secretary requesting a room at the Barracks as her husband had left her in very needy circumstances.
