Discharge due to reduction in the Army and chronic dysentery contracted when in India.
In the 1861 Census William Atkinson age 39 is a general labourer living at 14 Sills Yard Preston Lancashire with his two sons William John age 7 born Crompton Kent and Thomas age 6 born Devon. His wife Mary is not with the family at the time of the census.
During the voyage of the Merchantman Private Atkinson was charged with three offences;
6th November 1862 Fighting and abstentious conduct to Mrs Toole – 2 days in cell and loss of liquor for 7 days
29th November 1862 Abusing Private Dunn when on sentry- 20 days in cell and 1 month loss of liquor
1st February 1863 Creating a disturbance – 2 days loss of liquor
The Surgeon Superintendent wrote ‘Mrs Atkinson was guilty on several occasions of most foul language and is a woman of most passionate and violent temper’.
