There is some doubt as to the identity of Jane Arbuckle who returned to England in 1871 whether she was the Jane who was born in 1857 in India the daughter of John Arbuckle and Margaret Graham or Agnes Aitkin (called Jeanie within the family) born Western Australia 1867 the daughter of Agnes Vance and John Arbuckle.
In the 1881 Census for Jane and Duncan Ferguson Jane’s place of birth was recorded as Peshawar, East Indies although the birth has not been found.
After John Arbuckle was dismissed from the Governor’s service he was charged with assaulting his wife on numerous occasions. He avoided gaol by agreeing to depart the colony (temporarily) per “Hougoumont” in charge of a consignment of horses sailing on 4th February 1868. He apparently returned from Madras as on the 5th March he lodged a notice in the Perth Gazette saying he was no longer responsible for his wife’s debts as she had left her home in his house without his consent.
On the marriage certificate of John Arbuckle (widower) to Elizabeth Thomson on 2nd April 1879 at Glasgow. He said his father was Walter Arbuckle and mother Jane Aitken. He gave his occupation as a journeyman, boiler maker. While his Statutory Death record lists his 3 wives, Margaret Graham, Agnes Vance and Elizabeth Thomson. It also said his father was Walter Arbuckle a slater and his mother was Jane Aitken, his brother Alex Arbuckle was the informant.
