Further Information | British Army Sorldwide index 1841 John Barrett 362 Pte 61st ft Location Woolwich and Bolton Discharge due to Chronic rheumatism, Varicose veins in both legs and declining activity 5th March 1850 Catherine Barrett age 2 received medical treatment for pertussis aboard the Scindian 10th April Mary A Barrett age 9 months received treatment for diarrhoea aboard the Scindian After the arrival of the Scindian at Fremantle Captain Henderson wrote a report listing the rank name, trade or calling, rate of pension, date of enlistment for 5 months service, marital status, and number of children for each pensioner. Sometimes the trade of calling differed from that recorded at the time of attestation. Private John Barrett, general labourer, 1/-, 17th January, married, 2 children 20th September 1855 John Barrett wrote to the Colonial Secretary regarding what he saw as his unwarranted dismissal from the Enrolled Force as he was undergoing treatment for loss of sight. Lt Colonel Bruce replied that it was the practice to strike men off when a convict ship arrived and Barrett had failed to take advantage of the opportunities of advancement in the colony. John Barrett was totally blind by 1857 |
