Further Information | British Army Worldwide Index 1841 James Bond 697 Private 17th Foot location Colaba (India) Served in the campaign in Afghanistan 1838-1840. Present at the storming and capture of the fortress of Ghuznee 3rd July 1839 and of the Kelat 13th November 1839. Discharge due to chronic rheumatism On 20th January 1850 the Staff Officer Leicester was directed to send James bond to London by rail and ‘hense to London Bridge and to take the boat or rail to Gravesend and to take his luggage with him on the same train’. After the arrival of the Scindian at Fremantle Captain Henderson wrote a report listing the rank name, trade or calling, rate of pension, date of enlistment for 5 months service, marital status, and number of children for each pensioner. Sometimes the trade of calling differed from that recorded at the time of attestation. Private James Bond, farm labourer, 1/-, 21st January, single In March 1852 James Bond applied to Captain Bruce for permission to leave the Colony for Port Philip having been refused a transfer he subsequently left the Colony without leave. Bond being a single man had no passage money to repay. He was struck off for desertion from the Enrolled Force and stripped of his Good Conduct Badge. When his pension was resumed in 1860 he was paid six years arrears of pension and his Good Conduct badge restored of which he had been deprived in 1852 Last mention is a pension payment in Melbourne, Victoria in 1875 |
