Robert Curtis Gooch Baker was a widower and a sergeant in the 34th Regiment when he married Catherine Barnes in 1842. His WO97 records he was a sergeant from 12th October 1841-22nd January 1843 covering the period of his marriage.
Robert Baker requested that his sister accompany them on the voyage to WA but he was advised he would have to pay for her rations.
After the arrival of the Scindian at Fremantle Captain Henderson wrote a report listing the rank name, trade or calling, rate of pension, date of enlistment for 5 months service, marital status, and number of children for each pensioner. Sometimes the trade of calling differed from that recorded at the time of attestation.
Private Robert Baker, Gentleman’s servant, 9d, 21st January, married 3 children; we are missing one child who could be Matilda.
1855 Robert Baker and his wife and 4 children are living at the North Fremantle village they are all Protestants.
In 1861 Robert and his family left Western Australia for South Australia although Catherine had already married and remained in WA. Robert’s widow returned to Western Australia as she died in Coolgardie on 27th September 1900.
1st December 1874 Robert Baker was admitted to the (Royal) Adelaide hospital at the time he was a married man age 61, a Wesleyan living at Port Estate and working as a labourer. He said he was born in Suffolk and had arrived in the Colony (SA) 13 years previously on the Kestril (sic)
William also was admitted to the hospital on 6th March 1895 age 39. He was a married man and his religion was given as Primitive Methodist. His residence was Chas Street Paddington and he worked as a blacksmith, born Western Australia and had been 35 years in the Colony and had arrived on the Kestral (sic).
Son Robert Baker age 47 a married man was admitted to the RAH on 1st May 1896, he was Church of England, a stevedore born in Portsmouth and arrived on the Scindia(sic) 45 years previous.
