William Thomas who would have been 17 years of age is no longer with the family. 1880 November Arthur Allen’s name was put forward for the Enrolled Guard at the time he was living at the Barracks at Fremantle with his wife and 2 children 1881 Arthur Allen applied for the grant of £15 for the roof of his cottage at North Fremantle 1881 bought Barracks Furniture to the value of £1/6/3 and £5/8/623rd April 1884 dismissed as Sergeant Instructor of the Naval Artillery 15th April 1884 ‘It appears from endorsed telegram that Mr Allen (Arthur Allen) Sergeant instructor of the Naval Artillery has been suspended from Duty by order of Captain Smith for attending the Camp. It was absolutely necessary that Mr Allen should be with his Battery on that occasion to prevent dangerous accidents with the heavy guns he being the only experienced man among them. It would seem from the above report that the orders of His Excellency the Governor with reference to all Volunteers/Government servants being permitted to attend the Camp of Exercise from Thursday to Tuesday have been either ignored or over ridden’. Colonel Angelo wrote to the Colonial Secretary 19th April 1884 “Sergeant Allen appears to have acted upon the information furnished by me to the officer in command of his Battery that leave had been granted by His Excellency the Governor to all Volunteers .Government servants from Thursday to Tuesday. It will be very hard in my opinion when an excellent and deserving Non Commissioned officer if he suffers through the doing of his duties such in all accounts it would be desirable the two military services work in harmony’. SROWA Cons 527 2026/1884 Arthur was given a military funeral as a mark of respect for his role in the Fremantle Artillery. The funeral notice for Elizabeth said she was living with her son William. It appears son William Thomas Allen may have enlisted in the Royal Artillery 1869 age 18 (from our records he would have been age15). This man married Mary Elizabeth Cooke on 6th November 1876 at Woolwich, Kent. They had 3 children William Herbert 1877, Louis Arthur James 1879 and Florence Ellen who was born and died 1884. William Thomas Allen was discharged 8th November 1887 with a pension of 2 shilling and 2 ½ pence. He died 8th June 1920 at Acton Middlesex, England. He (Thomas) left his estate to his wife Mary Cooke Allen £960/11/10. William Saywell the father of Elizabeth Saywell/Sewell was attested into the Royal Artillery 3rd August 1815 at Devizes Wiltshire, age 17 years. He served for 21years and 11 days with 4 years at Gibraltar and 6 years in Canada. He was discharged on 11th July 1837 for chronic rheumatism and defective sight in his left eye. In 1871 he is living with Arthur and Elizabeth Allen and he is described as being blind. He entered the Chelsea hospital on 1 September 1873 and died on 5th April 1876.
