| Further Information | The 99th regiment served in Australia from 1842 to 1856 and a detachment arrived in Western Australia from Tasmania in 1849 before departing for the UK in 1856 where after 2 years garrison duty in Ireland they were stationed at Aldershot before departing for India where they took part in the 2nd Opium War, the 3rd Battle of Taku Forts and the Battle of Palikao. During his time as a soldier of the 99th regiment Thomas Martin while stationed in Western Australia was involved in two court cases: on 21st January 1854 Samuel Hardwick and John Butcher were charges with assaulting Thomas Martin of the 99th regiment, case dismissed. 2nd January 1856 he also gave evidence in the trial of Thomas Jardine (stealing from Robert King) The Detachment of the 99th regiment left WA for England on the Windsor on 15th February 1856.
