Further Information | Discharge due to a sabre wound to right shoulder and arm and also the left arm at Moodkee In the 1851 Census of England James and his family are under the surname Whitelaw and living at 7 Alport, Deansgate Manchester. James is working as a Shoemaker journeyman and is also Chelsea pensioner. Both he and his wife Johanna were born in Ireland and his daughter Mary was born Manchester. After the birth of John Gorman’s twins Mrs Whitely was the wet nurse as Mrs Gorman was very Ill. James Whitely received punishment for his conduct during the voyage of the Minden. In 1854 he received £15 for the erecting his house on his pensioner allotment at York. In the 1859 Census of York Western Australia James and Johana (sic) were living with their family of four children Mary, Patrick, Catherine and John. Both James and Johanna were born in Ireland although they were married in England. Mary was born in England while the other three children were born in Western Australia. James is a shoemaker and also living with them were another 4 shoemakers, fellow Pensioners David Jose and James Duffy and 2 ticket of leave men. James had five and a half acres of crop or hay, half an acre of fallow, a half-acre kitchen garden, 4 cattle having either eaten or sold another in 1859, and nine pigs. In 1880 he received eight shilling per month for storing the Government arms in a room of his house. James not only took an active interest in his church but also in the local community. He was a signatory to a petition to the Legislative Council in 1868, a councillor in the local council and was president of the HAC Benefit society in 1878.
