Further Information | 1841 British Army Worldwide Index Joseph Bolton was at Montreal and on a ship. He was discharged because of Chronic rheumatism but he had a record of alcoholism. 1851 Census Joseph Bolton age 44 and his wife Catherine age 34 are living at 264 Cowgate Edinburgh Scotland. No children. Joseph Bolton and his wife were sponsors for the baptism of John Gorman’s daughter Elizabeth Minden. John spoke very highly of Joseph. Joseph Bolton was dismissed from the Enrolled Force in October 1851 for misconduct (drunk under arms on Magazine Guard Duty) and was liable to repay the cost of the voyage to WA as per WO instructions ie fifteen pounds each for him and his wife to be deducted from his pension- from the final payment receipt it looks as if it took five years to repay. Captain Bruce advised the Governor to make an example of Joseph Bolton as he was the first pensioner to be charged with being drunk whilst on Duty. He stated “…that Joseph Bolton is a man from whom better might have been expected, as he is one of the most intelligent and best educated men amongst the pensioners”. Evidence was given by Patrick Griffen, Acting Corporal Barnett, Sergeant Major Allen and Captain Foss. He was struck off the Enrolled Force, the stoppage of half his pension and to refund the passage money for him and his wife. SROWA CSR Cons 36 Volume 273/7 13 February 1864 the Resident Magistrate Fremantle made application for Catherine Bolton the widow of Joseph Bolton who died about three weeks ago to be admitted to the Poor House. He said Joseph had been employed as Town Crier. Approved |
