In the 1861 Census P Toole age 37, a soldier with the 29th Regiment, is living at the Fulwood Barracks Preston, Lancashire with his wife E. Toole age 30 born Preston Lancashire and son J.J. Toole age 5 who was also born Preston. Discharge due to being unfit for further service due to ophthalmia and impaired general health The Surgeon Superintendent rated the conduct of both Patrick and Mrs Toole as Very Good. Both required medical treatment during the voyage Mrs Toole being hospitalised for 108 days for syncope. They were accompanied by their son Joseph. 30th December 1884 The Resident Magistrate Fremantle wrote to the Colonial Secretary “This poor woman’s husband has just died and she is, I believe, without any means of maintenance. She proposed applying to you for relief and I write to say that I think it is a deserving case.” “From enquiries made by me it appears that Elizabeth Toole is the widow of the late Patrick Toole, her age is 54 she has one son Thomas Toole age 20 years. Mrs Toole states that her son has done no work for the last 9 months. She has earned her living by washing since her husband’s death but is unable to do it on account of her health she suffers from a pain in her left side.” The Superintendent of the Poor House said that her son Thomas had done no work for 9 months and should be made to work and support her. 3rd May 1888 The Resident Magistrate Fremantle requested that a full ration be given to Mrs Toole –approved. 8th April 1891 Resident magistrate Fremantle again requested that the widow Toole who was weak and unable to work due to age be given rations. He said she was living at Fremantle and had no friends and did not want to go into the home –approved 15th April 14th May 1892 Arch Deacon Glyn Watkins made an application for a pensioners widow who he named as Mrs Elizabeth Toohill (sic) to occupy quarters in ‘the building known as the Military Barracks.’ He said she was a hard working woman who was having difficulties in keeping herself and she dislikes the idea of going into the home. The caretaker of the Barracks was disinclined to admit Mrs Toohill as he considered she associated with persons of bad character and was undeserving of the privileges sought 21st May 1892 Glyn Watkins made further inquiries regarding Mrs Toohill with her neighbours and found they considered it most unjust to deny her a place in barracks. 25th May 1892 Octavius Burt requested the Commissioner of Police to make further inquiries regarding Mrs Toohill or Toole’s character. Sub Inspector Lawrence made the inquiries and found Mrs Toole who was living at Albert’s Cottages Cantonment Street Fremantle was a hard working woman who occasionally took a little drink ‘but not to excess.’ At the time she was 61 years of age and under the receipt of a Government ration. She was unable to work and earn her rent and had no relations as her husband died in 1884 and she had since lost her son. 28th May 1892 Having established that it was Mrs Toole quarters (2 rooms) were found for her in the Fremantle Barracks. 14th March 1896 Application for Mrs Toole to be admitted to the women’s home as she was feeble in mind and body and unable to look after herself – approved.
