| Further Information | Reason For discharge: Unfit for service due to Chronic Rheumatism Shoulder hips and loins 1841 British Army Index – Pte Peter Monaghan No: 970, Location Mauritius 1851 British Army Index – Drummer and Fifer Peter Monaghan No: 970, Location Enniskillen, Ireland The Surgeon Superintendent of the Merchantman rated Peter and Mrs Monaghan’s conduct as Very Good. Mrs Monaghan (age 20) suffered from syncope during the voyage . They were accompanied by their daughter Thurza aged 8 months who died during the voyage 1906 Obituary – An interesting life terminated during last week ‘with the death, through old age, of Sergt.-Major Peter Monaghan, the first town clerk of Albany. The deceased was born at St. Kitts, Barbadoes, on October 19, 1822, and went with his parents to Tullamore, King’s County, Ireland, when very young. At the age of 12 he enlisted in the 35th. Royal Sussex Regiment, in which he served for 26 years. During that time he was on active service through the Indian Mutiny and at Mauritius. In the former campaign he received a medal for bravery, and was also wounded. He rose to the rank of Sergt.-Major, and in 1857 returned to Telescope, where he was pensioned off. He then joined Lord Ross’s forces, and married. After several years in this service he resigned and volunteered to go to Bermuda, to take convicts from there to Western Australia, arriving in Fremantle in the ship Second Merchantman in 1863. On arrival, Sergt.-Major Monaghan was appointed a warder and his wife was appointed head-teacher of the Government school at Fremantle. While there, he started and was the first conductor of the drum and fife band. He resided at Fremantle for 11 years. Mrs. Monaghan was then transferred to the Albany school, and the Sergt.-Major resigned his position as warder and came to Albany in 1874, in which year he was appointed clerk to the Albany Town Council. When the town was constituted a municipality he was the first town clerk and supervisor. He remained in the Council’s employment for 16 years. In 1885 the Albany – Defence Rifles were formed under Captain Hogers, and Mr. Monaghan was appointed Sergt .-Major and drill instructor, which position he held until the corps was disbanded. He started and was the first bandmaster of the first brass band in Albany, being a splendid musician. He carried on the work until 1890, when his health failed him and he was compelled to retire. During his early life he was a great athlete and cricketer, and after leaving the army at home he was appointed captain and teacher of the cricket club of Tullamore at a monthly salary. Up to the last two years he took a keen interest in military and sporting matters, but old age then impaired his faculties. [At the time of his death Peter Monaghan was living at Norfolk Street Albany] Cemetery record. Mary Monaghan the second (widow of Peter) wrote her will on 28th April 1910 leaving all she possessed to unrelated people with no acknowledgement of her step children. When she died 29th October 1914 her death certificate contained very little information and none at all of her 2 marriages. |
