Albany Town Councillor 1889-1893, gold explorer to Parkers’ Find and Norseman (1891-93), vigneron at Mt Baker Estate (Bakers Hill 1903-1911), Glen Hardey (Glen Forrest 1910-1920) and Coorinja (Toodyay 1919 – onwards still with Wood Family). He and his brother Charles who constructed the original animal cages for Perth Zoo. William later lived in South Perth and looked after his parents until they died. Later he moved to two homes in (134 and 233) Adelaide Terrace Perth. William went into business with Irwin (real estate agent) and the original Charles (Charlie) Carter) and they bought up the northern side of Hay Street from Pier Street to the Criterion Hotel in 1922. The building on the corner of Hay add space and Pier Streets still has the Wood’s Buildings 1922 on the facade to this day. | Land Grants / Purchases Western Australia | 1 April 1863 purchased South Perth Location Sub 96 of 6 acres 2 roods at 1 pound per acre. When they arrived in WA in 1862 William and Eliza rowed up the Swan River and had to camp in a tent where Langley Park now is (Stone’s Garden) where all the Perth bound guards also had to camp. William and Eliza bought the 6 acre property which is now Wesley College on 1 April 1863 (which surrounded their church/school accommodation) where they grew garden produce with the help of convict labour. | Further Information | British Army, Worldwide Index 1841 William was stationed at Bermuda soldier number 1352 with the 30th Regiment 1851 William was stationed at Newfoundland soldier number 692 with the Royal Newfoundland Companies Discharge: Due to rheumatism and vertigo. 1841 UK Census – Eliza was a dressmaker in Exeter. C 1845 Eliza went to Newfoundland around age 25 with her brother Charles Moxey via Halifax Nova Scotia. C 1845-1859 William bought a 100 acres of land in Newfoundland. William and Eliza co-habited for several years before their 1850 Newfoundland marriage and had two children born out of wedlock one of which was baptised Anglican. William and Eliza left Newfoundland after his discharge in1859 and shortly after William Thomas’s birth and moved to Manchester near Salford where William was born. 1861 Census of England RG 09/2942/21 the family of William and Eliza and sons Samuel and William are living at 93 Lombard Street Manchester. William is a pensioner and Eliza a dress maker. William said he was born at Cross Lane Salford, Manchester and Eliza at Exeter. Both boys were born St John’s Newfoundland 1861-1862 Mrs Wood conducted the school for the children of the guard on-board the Lincelles. Dr William Crawford was the Surgeon on board and gave his ruler to William when he returned to the UK. This is still in possession of one of his descendants. 28 May 1862 Eliza was appointed the school teacher at South Perth by the Governor on a salary of 40 pounds per annum. 1865-1871 William employed 6 Ticket of Leave Men at South Perth C 1870s-1880s William joined the Perth Rifle Volunteers and competed in shooting events in Perth, Albany and Kojonup 25 June 1897 William attended Queens Diamond Jubilee Banquet.
